Frankfort has two distinct kinds of house, and they want two different approaches.

There is the historic core — the blocks around Breidert Green and the old downtown along White Street, with older homes, front porches, and human-scale rooflines. And then there is the subdivision Frankfort that went up through the 1990s and 2000s off LaGrange Road and Route 30, full of substantial brick and stone two-stories with rooflines that are anything but simple.

It is that second group where roofline lighting either looks magnificent or looks unfinished, and there is very little in between.

Why Complicated Rooflines Are the Whole Job

A builder-era Frankfort two-story typically has a front elevation with a main gable, a secondary gable over the garage, a bump-out or two, sometimes a dormer, and a covered entry — each at a different height and pitch.

That is a lot of roofline, and it is where most displays go wrong:

The shortcut problem. Someone runs the lower eave, skips the gable peaks because they are high and awkward, and calls it done. From the street the house reads as half-lit, and the eye goes straight to the dark peak.

The spacing problem. Bulbs hand-spaced by feel drift. Over a long run, you end up with sections visibly tighter or looser than others. At night that reads as sloppiness before it reads as anything else.

The sag problem. Clips that were not seated properly on the shingle edge let the line droop between attachment points. One sagging bay on an otherwise straight run is more noticeable than no lights at all.

Warm White, and Why It Matters on Brick and Stone

We default to warm white at roughly 2700K — the same warmth as the incandescent bulbs everyone pictures — because cooler white reads distinctly blue against warm masonry and makes a handsome brick elevation look cold and slightly institutional.

On the older homes near downtown with painted wood siding, warm white does the same favor: it flatters the paint rather than washing it out.

Retail-grade strings are simply not engineered for that cycle, which is why the display that looked great on December 1st has two dark runs by New Year's — and why nobody wants to go back up a ladder in January to deal with it.
