Lemont is really two towns, and a display built for one looks wrong on the other.

There is the old village on the bluff — the streets climbing above the Des Plaines valley and the canal corridor, with smaller homes, front porches, narrow lots, limestone foundations and trim, and simpler but steeper roof pitches. And there is subdivision Lemont west of there, where the 1990s and 2000s brought large brick and stone houses with multi-gable elevations and generous setbacks.

The Bluff Homes: Pick One Thing and Do It Properly

On the older stock the architecture is already doing the work. The lighting's job is to trace it, not to compete with it.

C7, generally. Proportionate to a smaller elevation seen from a narrow lot, and it does not crowd original trim the way the larger bulb does.

Light the porch. On a home with a real front porch, outlining the porch roof edge and wrapping the columns beats concentrating everything on the main roofline. It frames the door, which is where the eye goes anyway, and it reads beautifully at the close viewing distances these lots produce.

Follow every jog. Older rooflines step, return and change pitch. Cutting across a bay or skipping a short return is obvious to someone standing fifteen feet away on the pavement.

Nothing driven into the house. On original painted woodwork this is the entire reason to hire someone. A staple breaks the paint film, water gets into the hole, and three winters later a piece of trim you cannot buy off a shelf has rotted. West of the village the problem inverts. These elevations are large, complicated and set back — and they punish incompleteness, not excess.

Every plane, no exceptions. A typical elevation here has a main gable, a secondary gable over the garage, a bump-out or two, sometimes a dormer. The standard shortcut is running the easy lower eave and skipping the high peaks — and from the street the house then reads as half-lit, with the eye going straight to the dark gable.

Spacing consistency over a long run. Wide elevations expose drift. Bulbs spaced by feel wander, and sections end up visibly tighter or looser.

Warm White on Limestone

We default to warm white, around 2700K. Lemont's limestone and painted wood both go cold and slightly grey under cooler white — warm white keeps stone looking like stone and paint looking like paint. On the newer stock it does the same favour for warm brick.

Why Not DIY

Two-storey subdivision rooflines put you two storeys up a ladder, often over a drive on uneven ground. On the bluff, the risk is different but real: slope, steps, and older homes where one staple in the wrong place is an expensive repair.

What Installation Day Looks Like

You do not need to be home, though on the bluff we may need to talk through access if the drive is steep or the lot is tight.

Staging comes first on a slope. On a terraced or pitched lot, where the ladders can safely stand is the first decision of the day. We plate feet and work off level footing rather than improvising on grade.

Older homes get handled differently. On original trim the crew works slower and uses clips only — no fastener touches painted woodwork at any point. If a run genuinely cannot be clipped, we will tell you rather than reach for a staple gun.
