Two houses on the same Elmhurst block order the same display from the same company. Same bulbs, same spacing, same color temperature. One reads golden and rich. The other reads pale, almost washed out.
Nothing is wrong with either installation. Warm white holiday lights on brick simply behave differently than the identical bulbs on white-painted siding, and once you know why, a lot of otherwise-puzzling display outcomes across the Chicago suburbs make sense.
Light doesn't have a color until it lands on something
A bulb emits a color temperature — for warm white, generally somewhere in the 2400K–3000K range, the amber end of white. But what your eye actually receives is that light after it has bounced off your house.
Two properties of the wall change it:
Reflectance — how much light comes back. A pale surface returns most of it. A dark surface absorbs most of it.
Spectral tint — which wavelengths come back. A red-brown brick absorbs blue and reflects warm tones, so it returns light warmer than what hit it. A cool grey stone does the opposite.
So the wall is not a neutral backdrop. It's the second half of the fixture.

Red and orange brick
The most common exterior across older DuPage and Cook County housing, and the most flattering surface there is for warm white.

Limestone, greystone, and pale stone
Common on the North Shore and on the historic homes in Lake Forest, Geneva, and St. Charles.
Pale stone is highly reflective, which is good — the display reads bright without more bulbs. But limestone often has a cool or grey cast, so it can pull warm white slightly toward neutral. The house looks bright rather than golden.
This is one of the few exteriors where going a touch warmer than default pays off, because the stone will walk it back toward neutral anyway. Warm light also rakes beautifully across the texture of rough-faced stone, picking up shadow and relief that flat surfaces don't have.
Stucco and painted masonry
Highly reflective and usually near-neutral, so stucco is honest — it returns roughly what you give it. Whatever color temperature you choose is close to what you'll see.
The catch is that stucco's smoothness shows everything. Uneven bulb spacing, a slightly different white in one run, a cord shadow — all of it reads clearly on a broad flat stucco wall in a way it wouldn't on a busy brick face. Precision matters more here than on almost any other exterior.
Vinyl, aluminum, and fiber-cement siding
The most common exterior in the newer Chicago suburbs, and the most variable, because siding comes in every color.
Light siding — the classic white, cream, or pale grey on a Naperville or Plainfield subdivision — is very reflective. Warm white reads bright and clean, but on a cool grey it can look slightly washed out, because the grey's blue undertone flattens the amber.
Dark siding — the deep navy, charcoal, and black exteriors that have become popular on rebuilds — is the opposite problem. Dark walls absorb most of the light, so the wall itself stays dark and the bulbs read as bright points against black.
That's not a flaw; it's actually the most dramatic look available. But it changes the design: on a dark house the display is a line drawing, not a wash, so the crispness of the run and the evenness of spacing become the entire effect. There's no glow softening the mistakes.
Cedar, wood, and natural siding
Wood is warm by nature and reflects warm light beautifully — similar behavior to red brick. Stained cedar in particular glows under warm white. Weathered grey wood behaves more like cool stone.
The mixed-material problem
Here's where Chicago suburbs homes get complicated, because most of them aren't one material.
Brick on the first floor and siding on the second. Stone base with stucco above. A limestone entry surround on a brick house. Each material returns your single warm white differently, so one fixture temperature produces two or three visual results on the same facade.
The design answer isn't different bulbs on different sections — that reads as a mistake. It's placement: put the light where the material you want to feature will carry it, and let the rest fall away. On a stone-and-siding house, tracing the stone elements and leaving broad siding fields darker usually looks more deliberate than lighting everything evenly.

The one rule that overrides all of this
However your exterior behaves, use one color temperature across the entire property.
The most common error in the suburbs isn't picking the wrong white — it's picking two. A warm roofline with cooler white on the trees, or professionally installed eaves plus a few big-box strands added to the shrubs the following year. Nobody consciously identifies the temperature difference; everybody registers that something looks off.
