There is a particular kind of house in the Chicago suburbs that defeats DIY holiday lighting completely, and it is not the biggest one on the block. It is the one with a steep pitch, a third-story peak, and four separate roof planes meeting in two valleys — the Tudor in Wheaton, the shingle-style in Lake Forest, the 2005 custom in Naperville with the two-story entry gable.
Holiday lighting on steep and complex rooflines is a genuinely different problem from lighting a ranch, and it changes three things: how the work is done, what it costs, and — the part almost nobody discusses — which lines are worth lighting at all.
What "steep" actually means for the work
Roof pitch is written as rise over run. A 4/12 is a gentle slope you can comfortably walk. A 12/12 is a 45-degree angle. Above roughly 8/12, most people cannot stand on the surface without specialised footwear and fall protection, and above 10/12 nobody should be trying.
That single number cascades through everything:
Ladder work replaces roof work. On a walkable pitch an installer can move along the roof plane. On a steep one, the entire run is done from ladders — which means repositioning every few feet, and every reposition is a setup and a risk.
Height compounds it. A third-story peak on a steep roof is thirty-plus feet of ladder on ground that is often frozen, sloped, or planted. Ladder footing in November in Illinois is not a solved problem.
Valleys and dormers multiply the setups. Each dormer is its own small roof with its own edges. Four dormers is not one job with four extra feet — it is four jobs.
Time on ladder is the real cost driver. Not the linear footage of light. This is why a 3,000-square-foot ranch and a 3,000-square-foot Tudor can be quoted quite differently, and why an installer who quotes purely per foot has not looked at your house.
The design question nobody asks
Here is where most complex-roofline displays go wrong, and it is not a safety issue — it is an aesthetic one.
A complicated roof does not want every line traced.
Outlining every ridge, rake, valley, and dormer on a house with eight roof planes produces a bright tangle. From the street it reads as noise: the eye cannot find the shape, because every line has equal weight. It also costs the most and takes the longest, which is a poor combination.
The stronger approach is hierarchy. Choose the lines that describe the house:
- The main ridge or primary rake lines — the silhouette people actually recognise
- The entry gable — where the house says "here is the front door"
- One dormer, or a rhythmic pair, rather than all of them
- A strong vertical where the architecture offers one — a chimney mass, a turret, a two-story bay
And then stop. The unlit planes become negative space, and negative space is what lets the lit lines read. A Tudor with its main gable and entry lit is more striking than the same Tudor with every edge outlined — and it is safer and cheaper to install.
That decision belongs in a custom holiday lighting design conversation, before anyone is on a ladder.
When the answer is "we're not lighting that"
An honest installer will tell you some lines should be left alone. Common cases:
- A peak reachable only by walking a steep plane at height. The photograph is not worth the fall.
- Slate, tile, or aged cedar shake where the attachment risk exceeds the visual gain.
- A plane with no safe ladder footing below it — over a steep grade, a window well, a deck rail, or a pond edge.
- A line the street cannot see anyway. A rear-facing or heavily screened plane. Money spent there buys nothing.
Hearing "we would leave that one" is a good sign. It means somebody assessed rather than promised.
Why DIY stops being reasonable here
We are not squeamish about homeowners hanging their own lights on a single-story ranch with an open gutter. That is a real Saturday and a fair outcome.
Steep and tall is a different category:
- Ladder falls are the dominant holiday-decorating injury, and they cluster in exactly these conditions — extension ladders, height, cold, and rushing before dark
- The window is short and the weather is bad, so the work happens in the worst conditions of the year
- Repositioning a 28-foot ladder twenty times on frozen ground is where mistakes happen, not on the first setup
- And in December, when a run at the third-story peak goes dark, somebody has to go back up
That last point is the one homeowners underestimate. Installation is one trip up. A season is several. Ongoing light maintenance and repair is a large part of what professional service actually buys on a tall house.
What to ask before you hire, on a house like this
- "Are you insured, and can you confirm it?" Non-negotiable at height. We are fully insured and will say so plainly.
- "How will you reach the third-story peak?" A confident, specific answer is what you want.
- "Which lines would you light, and which would you skip?" Anyone who says "all of them" has not thought about the design or the risk.
- "What attaches to the roof?" Clips, always. Nothing stapled, nailed, or screwed into fascia, trim, or shingles.
- "What happens if a run fails in December?" On a tall roof this is the question that matters most.

Does a steep roof cost more to light?
Usually yes, and the reason is ladder time rather than the number of bulbs. Steep pitch means the entire run is worked from ladders with frequent repositioning, and dormers and valleys each add their own setups — so two houses of identical size can price quite differently.
Should I outline every roofline on a complex house?
Generally no. Tracing every plane on a multi-gable house reads as visual noise from the street, and choosing the main ridge, the entry gable and one or two accents describes the architecture far better — while costing less and requiring less time at height.
Can holiday lights be installed on a very tall or third-story roofline?
Yes, by a properly equipped and insured crew. What matters is safe ladder footing, the right clip for the roof edge, and an honest assessment of which peaks can be reached safely — some can, some genuinely should not be.
Is it safe to hang my own lights on a steep roof?
