Nothing about that display was ugly. It was well made and well installed. It was simply aimed at a house instead of at a lawn. That distinction — glare and light trespass versus a display that reads beautifully from the street — is the single most overlooked part of holiday lighting design in the Chicago suburbs, and it has almost nothing to do with how many lights you have.
Two different problems, often confused
Glare is light hitting an eye directly. It happens when a bare source is pointed anywhere a person will be looking from — the street, the sidewalk, a driveway, a window. Glare is what makes a display uncomfortable to look at, and it flattens everything behind it, because a pupil contracting against a bright point stops resolving the softer detail around it.
Light trespass is your light landing on someone else's property. Usually a bedroom window, a patio, or a back garden. It is not about brightness at your house; it is about where the spill goes.
A display can have neither, one, or both. Fixing them requires different moves.
Why this shows up more in Chicagoland than people expect
Three regional factors stack up.
Snow is a reflector. A fresh snow cover throws a large share of your display's light back up and outward. The same scheme that looked measured on brown November grass can be noticeably brighter in January, and the spill pattern changes with it.
Bare trees stop screening. The oak or maple that shielded a neighbour's window in October is transparent in December. Screening you never had to think about disappears exactly when the display goes up.
Lots are tight in a lot of the region. On the older village grids — Elmhurst, Wilmette, La Grange, the Chicago-adjacent suburbs — houses sit close enough that a side-elevation floodlight is functionally aimed at somebody's bedroom. On acre lots this is less of a concern, but those properties introduce a different version: long sightlines where a single harsh point is visible from a quarter mile.
The moves that fix it
Aim down and across, never out and up
Ground-mounted elements should wash a plane — a wall, a shrub mass, a tree trunk — not throw light across a property line. If you can see the bare source from the street, so can everyone else, and so can the neighbours.
Choose warmth over wattage
Warm white in the 2400K–2700K range reads as inviting at a fraction of the perceived harshness of a cool-white or blue-white source at the same output. Cool white does two unhelpful things outdoors in winter: it goes faintly clinical against snow, and it feels brighter than it measures, which pushes people toward complaints. Warm is not just a style preference. It is the lower-friction choice.
Let the display have dark in it
This is the counterintuitive one. A display with deliberate dark zones reads as designed and has more depth than one lit edge to edge. Uniform brightness flattens a house into a glowing rectangle — and produces the most spill for the least visual return.
Trace lines, don't flood surfaces
Point-source lines — C9 or C7 bulbs along a roof edge, a rail, a tree structure — describe a shape without producing a broad, spilling wash. Floodlighting a whole elevation is where glare and trespass usually originate. A well-designed custom holiday lighting design is mostly lines and accents, with washes used sparingly and aimed carefully.
Watch the side elevations
Fronts get designed. Sides get whatever is left over, which is exactly why the spill lands there. On a tight lot, the side facing your neighbour deserves more thought than the front, not less.
Use a timer, and pick a sensible off hour
A display that shuts off around 10 or 11 p.m. is a genuinely good neighbour. It also extends the life of the material and cuts the running cost. Almost nobody is looking at your house at 2 a.m. except the person trying to sleep forty feet away.
What a good display actually optimises for
Not maximum output. Maximum contrast at the viewing distance that matters.
For most homes in Naperville, Glenview, or Orland Park, that distance is the street — twenty to eighty feet, from a car moving slowly or a person walking a dog. A display tuned for that distance uses less light than people expect, keeps sources out of the direct sightline, and has enough dark around it to let the lit parts read.
Displays that generate complaints are almost always tuned for a distance nobody actually views from — usually "as bright as possible from anywhere."
If a neighbour raises it
It is worth handling well, because it is nearly always fixable and rarely worth a bad winter over.
- Ask which window, and go look from there after dark. The fix is usually obvious once you have stood where they stand.
- Aim before you dim. Rotating or repositioning one element normally solves it without touching the rest of the display.
- Add a shield or move the fixture back. A source tucked behind a shrub mass or set closer to the wall it is washing spills far less.
- Bring the off time forward. Often the entire complaint.
