What actually makes January removal harder than October installation

The roof surface is the problem, not the height. A dry October shingle gives grip. A January roof carries frost, meltwater, or a thin invisible glaze. This is the single largest safety difference between the two jobs, and it's why January is when people get hurt.

Daylight is gone. Sunset on the North Shore is around 4:40 in mid-January. A takedown that would take two comfortable daylight hours in October becomes a race or a two-visit job.

Strands are brittle. Cold PVC and cold wire don't flex. Yanking a stiff strand off a gutter run is how insulation cracks and sockets split — which is why a display pulled down carelessly often can't be reused even if it survived the season fine.
