A 1920s bungalow in Berwyn has one exterior outlet, on the back of the house, and it's not GFCI-protected. A center-entrance colonial in Wheaton has two, both on the front, both on the same circuit as the garage door opener. Neither is unusual.
No exterior outlets — or one inadequate one — is one of the most common practical obstacles to a holiday display in the older parts of the Chicago suburbs. It's solvable. But the workaround almost everyone reaches for first is genuinely dangerous, and worth naming before the fixes.
The thing not to do
Do not run an extension cord out through a window or door.
It's the instinct, and it fails in a specific, well-documented way. A cord pinched in a window sash or a door jamb gets compressed at exactly one point. Compression damages insulation. Damaged insulation inside a closed door, under load, in a spot nobody inspects for eight weeks, is how holiday electrical fires start.
Two secondary problems compound it. A door that won't close properly around a cord kills your weather seal for the whole season — which in a Chicagoland December is a real heating cost. And a cord run through a window defeats the window lock, which is a security issue you've created for eight weeks.
The related mistake: daisy-chaining cords from a single indoor outlet. Indoor circuits are shared with things you don't think about — a bedroom, a hallway, sometimes the furnace. Adding a full exterior display to one is how you find the breaker.
What actually works
1. Add a proper exterior GFCI outlet
This is the real answer, and it's cheaper than people expect. A licensed electrician adding one weatherproof GFCI-protected exterior outlet is a modest job on most Chicago suburbs homes, and it permanently solves the problem for every season after.
Worth doing properly: a dedicated circuit if you're planning a substantial display, an in-use ("bubble") cover so it stays protected with a cord plugged in, and placement chosen for where the display's load actually concentrates rather than wherever the wall was easiest.
If you're going to own the house for more than a couple of seasons, this is the option with the best return.
2. Work within one outlet — with the load calculated
A single GFCI outlet can carry more display than most homeowners assume, if the display is designed around it. This is where LED matters enormously: commercial-grade LED draws a fraction of what incandescent pulls, so a roofline plus a couple of wrapped trees that would have needed three or four circuits as incandescent frequently runs on one as LED.
The requirement is that somebody does the arithmetic before installation day rather than discovering the ceiling on the first wet night. 3. Use the garage, correctly
Many older Chicago suburbs homes have a usable garage circuit and a door that a properly rated cord can be routed near without being pinched. Detached garages in particular often have their own feed.
This one is workable but needs judgment: outdoor-rated cordage sized to the run length, routing that never crosses a walkway, connections elevated off the ground and weatherproofed, and the garage circuit's existing load accounted for.
4. Scale the display to the power
The unglamorous option, and sometimes the right one. If the house genuinely has one marginal outlet and adding another isn't happening this year, design a display that fits it — a traced roofline and a lit entry, skip the tree wrapping, revisit next season. A smaller display that runs reliably all season beats a large one that's dark half of December.

Why GFCI protection is non-negotiable outdoors
Every outdoor holiday circuit should be GFCI-protected, and on an older home you should verify rather than assume.
Two things to check: whether the outlet is genuinely GFCI-protected (either the outlet itself or an upstream breaker), and whether it still trips when you press test. An outlet that doesn't trip on test is not protecting anyone.
And when a GFCI trips repeatedly through the season, it's reporting a real fault — almost always moisture at a connection. Resetting it over and over without finding the cause is the wrong response, and it's the point at which a display stops being merely annoying.
The older-home pattern across Chicagoland
There's a consistent story in the pre-war housing stock of Berwyn, Oak Park, Elmhurst and the older streets of Evanston and Wilmette: one or two exterior outlets, often not GFCI, frequently sharing a circuit with something else, and no capacity headroom.
