Every February, somewhere in the Chicago suburbs, a homeowner stares up at a two-foot icicle hanging off their gutter and mentally connects it to the string of C9s running along the same gutter.

The connection between holiday lights and ice dams is one of the most persistent misunderstandings in exterior home care around Chicagoland, and it's worth untangling — partly because the blame is misplaced, and partly because snow and ice do affect a display in real ways, just not the ones people assume.

Here's what's actually going on up there.

What an ice dam actually is

An ice dam forms when the upper part of a roof is warm enough to melt snow and the lower edge is cold enough to refreeze it.

Heat escapes from the living space into the attic — through recessed lights, bath fans, gaps around the chimney chase, insufficient insulation, or attic ductwork. That heat warms the roof deck. Snow on the warm part melts, runs down as water, hits the eave and the gutter, which hang over unheated outside air, and freezes there. Repeat that cycle for a week and you get a ridge of ice at the eave. Water backs up behind it, works under the shingles, and ends up in the wall or on the ceiling.

The whole mechanism is attic heat and ventilation. That's it. It's a building-envelope problem that a roofer or an insulation contractor solves.

So why do people blame the lights?

Three reasons, and they're all understandable.

The lights are the visible thing at the exact spot the ice forms. The dam builds at the eave, and the roofline lights run along the eave. Correlation is sitting right there.

People remember incandescent bulbs. Old C9 incandescent bulbs genuinely produced heat — enough that you'd notice touching one. If anything, that heat was too little and too localized to melt a snowpack, but the idea that "the bulbs are warm" stuck around long after the bulbs stopped being warm.

Modern LED changes the picture entirely. A commercial-grade C9 LED runs cool to the touch. It doesn't produce meaningful heat, and it isn't in contact with the roof deck where the melting happens anyway. A full LED roofline across an average Naperville or Glen Ellyn house draws less power than a single incandescent lamp in your living room.

Put plainly: LED holiday lights do not cause ice dams. If you have ice dams, you had them before the lights went up, and you'll have them after they come down in January.

What snow and ice actually do to a display

Now the part that's real.

Ice adds weight. A cord with bulbs is light. That same cord glazed in a quarter inch of ice is not. Over a run of eighty feet, that weight is meaningful, and it pulls down on every clip along the line. This is the number one cause of a run sagging or releasing mid-winter.

Cold shrinks cord. Wire contracts as it cools. A run installed drum-tight on a 55-degree October afternoon in Wheaton is under genuine tension at five degrees in January. Something has to give — usually a clip, occasionally a connection.

Snow slides. On a steep pitch, especially metal or slate, an accumulated snowpack releases all at once. Anything sitting in its path goes with it. This is why attachment strategy on steep roofs is a design decision made in October, not a field improvisation.

Meltwater finds connections. The freeze-thaw cycle drives water into any connection that's oriented to catch it. That's what's behind the classic "everything worked fine and then one warm Tuesday half the display died."

Gutters full of ice move. A gutter carrying an ice load can pull slightly away from the fascia. Clips hooked on the front lip travel with it. Usually harmless, occasionally enough to open a connection.

How a good install plans for all of this in advance

The difference between a display that survives a Chicagoland January and one that doesn't is almost entirely decided at install time, in October.

Slack, deliberately. Runs go up with enough slack to absorb thermal contraction and ice weight. It looks marginally less taut on installation day and it's the reason the run is still up in February.

Clips sized to the actual profile. Half-round gutters, ogee aluminum, box gutters, and shingle courses all take different clips. Using one clip type across a whole house is fast and it's how you get releases in the first hard freeze.

Connections oriented down and sealed. So meltwater runs away from a connection rather than pooling in it. This single detail prevents most mid-season outages.

Attachment planned around snow slide paths. On steep or metal roofs, runs are placed and secured with the understanding that a snowpack will release at some point.

Nothing penetrating the fascia. No staples, no nails. A penetration into fascia or trim is a water entry point, and water plus an Illinois winter is exactly the combination you don't want introduced twenty feet up.

Since the lights aren't the cause, here's where the fix lives:

  • Attic insulation and air sealing. The real fix. Stop heat from reaching the roof deck in the first place.
  • Attic ventilation. Soffit-to-ridge airflow keeps the deck close to outside temperature.
  • Keep gutters clear before winter. A gutter full of leaves in Hinsdale or Downers Grove holds water that freezes first.
  • Rake snow off the lower roof after a big storm if you can do it safely from the ground.
