The warranty question to ask first
Start here, because it is the one with money attached.
Most solar installations come with a roof penetration warranty — coverage on the mounting points where the racking was attached through your roofing. That warranty typically has conditions, and one common condition is that no additional penetrations be made in the covered area, and that unauthorized work on the array or its mounts voids coverage.
The practical implication: any holiday light attachment method that puts a fastener through roofing near the array is a genuine risk to that coverage. That rules out the DIY standbys — roofing nails, screwed-in hooks, anything driven into the deck.
It does not rule out professional installation, because a proper install does not penetrate anything. We attach with gutter-safe clips and shingle-tab clips, which grip the gutter lip or slide under a shingle tab without a fastener. Nothing is drilled, nailed, or screwed. That is the standard method on every home we light, and it happens to be exactly what a solar roof requires.
Worth doing anyway: pull your solar contract and check the roof warranty language before the season. It takes five minutes and it settles the question.
What can and cannot be attached to
Two rules cover almost everything:
Never attach to the panels, racking, or rails. Not with clips, not with zip ties, not with magnets, not "just this one spot." Panels are precision equipment with their own warranty, the racking is engineered for a specific load, and adding attachment points changes both. Any installer who suggests otherwise should not be on your roof.
Never route wiring across the array. Beyond the shading issue, wiring lying across panels moves in wind, abrades the glass surface over a season, and creates a snow-and-ice snag point. Runs get planned around the array, not over it.
That leaves the gutter line, the roof edge outside the array footprint, the fascia, and every non-roof element of the property — which, as it turns out, is plenty.
Shading: less of an issue than people expect
Homeowners often worry that holiday lights on the roofline will cut their production. In practice this is a minor concern for two reasons.
Holiday lights on a Chicagoland home run in the dark — roughly dusk to 11 p.m. or midnight — which is precisely when the array is producing nothing. And a C9 strand clipped along the gutter line sits below and outside the array footprint, so its physical shadow during daylight falls on the gutter, not on the panels.
Where shading genuinely matters is anything that ends up above the array — a rooftop decoration, an inflatable anchored high, a strand run across a ridge above the panels. Those cast real daytime shadow, and on a string inverter a partial shadow can drag down more than its share of output. Keep everything below and outside the array and the issue disappears.
How to light a solar roof so it still looks finished
Here is the design problem nobody warns you about: an array frequently occupies the largest, most street-facing roof plane on the house — the south or southwest face. That is often the exact plane a display would otherwise trace.
Three approaches work:
Trace the perimeter that remains. Most homes have gables, dormers, a garage wing, a porch roof, and eave runs outside the array. Outlining those cleanly reads as intentional, and the array plane becomes negative space rather than a gap.
Shift weight downward and outward. Wrapped entry columns, garland at the door, lit window frames, wreaths, and porch-level detail carry a display beautifully and are completely unaffected by what is on the roof. On a solar home this is usually where the budget should go.
Let the landscape carry more. Wrapped trees, lit evergreen beds, and pathway lighting are where solar homes tend to look best, because the display's visual center of gravity moves off the roof entirely. A well-lit landscape with a modest roofline outline reads as designed. A half-traced roofline with a dark yard reads as unfinished.

Why this is a worse DIY job than most
Ordinary roofline lighting is already poor DIY territory in Illinois — ladders, cold, height. A solar roof adds three things.
You are working around live electrical equipment. Panels generate whenever there is daylight, regardless of whether the system is switched on at the inverter, and the DC side stays energized. Contact with damaged wiring is a real hazard, not a theoretical one.
Panels are slippery and fragile. They are glass, they are smooth, they get frost on them, and stepping on one to reach something can cause damage that costs more than the entire display.
And the warranty exposure sits with you. A professional crew that damages something carries insurance for it. A homeowner who cracks a panel or voids a roof warranty in November owns that outcome alone.
